Emergency Management Resources (EMR), HeartShock LLC, has been doing business since 1980.  We are an “Authorized Provider of American Heart Association ECC Courses” and a national AED Distributor.  Emergency Management Resources is a woman-owned business enterprise and certified by the State of Texas as a Historically Underutilized Business (HUB).

Mission

To reduce and prevent death and disability from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) by placing AEDs in all public areas, business and industry and ultimately placing them in the homes.  These areas include: airports, sports arenas/stadiums, theaters, malls and large industry and/or high-rise office buildings.  It is our mission to provide the support services of CPR/AED education, medical direction, implementation, and EMS notification and inspection assistance. 

Emergency Management Resources also has a variety of educational programs and services designed for the workplace that help ensure the safety and well being of employees. 

History of Cardiac Arrest

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is on a rapid rise throughout the United States.  Out of the approximately one million heart attacks in the US, a quarter of them happens outside the hospital and requires intervention by the layperson and the local Emergency Medical Services (EMS).  Although Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation courses are widely available, training people in CPR provides for only a nation wide survival rate of 3-5 percent.  Defibrillation is the only effective treatment for SCA.

Response time of EMS is reported to be an average of five (5) minutes. However, this response does not include the actual response from the time a person suffers SCA to when they are treated with advance therapy.  Response times only document from the time the dispatcher enters the call to the time the EMS unit pulls up in front of the scene.  It does not include the following considerations:

1. How long was the person down before someone recognized the emergency;
2. How long did it take for someone to go and call EMS;
3. Public Safety dispatch time;
4. How long from the time the EMS unit arrived and reported out at the scene, verses when did they actually make contact with the patient and began treating;
5. High traffic times; and
6. Construction congestion

 All these factors contribute to response times greater than five minutes.  True response times can be as great as 10-20 minutes depending on these and other unknown factors. 

With the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) used within a minute, offers a ninety percent (90%) chance of survival from SCA [1].  Chances of survival are decreased by approximately 7-10% for every minute defibrillation is delayed.  Dependence on EMS for rapid defibrillation offers less than a twenty percent (20%) chance of survival. 

The public deserves to live in a community were they are not only safe, but protected from SCA with immediate AED capability.  Developing programs like these can provide our community with:

1. Valuable research information with regard to medical science
2. Valuable education for our citizens
3. Increased business growth and expansion into our community
4. Support for small woman-owned business; and
5. Increase number of lives saved from SCA

EMR Consulting Services

EMR has provided services and consulted many major corporations throughout America including; CLUBCORP, Nokia, Kraft Foods, Southwestern Medical School, Dallas County Community College District, Southern Methodist University, University of Texas at Dallas, Construction Education Foundation, American Builders and Contractors and American General Contractors (OUOIN). 

Through its alliance with the American Heart Association training network, EMR has expanded its training program nationally.  EMR has a large credential instructor base that can deliver English, Spanish, Vietnamese and Sign Language.  Course offering include First Aid, CPR and AED usage; CISM; OSHA Safety; Bloodborne Pathogens, Emergency Oxygen, and Risk Management.
